Landscape
Landscape is an integral part of architecture. The relationship between the building and its environment is fundamental to the success of each. We work with the natural elements inherent in a property and design to capitalize on views, solar orientation and garden elements to enhance both exterior and interior spaces. We have extensive experience in landscape architectural design throughout New England.
Small Projects
Small projects can be stand-alone buildings or a part of a larger architectural composition. Whatever the size, they address basic human responses to scale and beauty. There is a freedom in small projects that allows for design innovation and spontaneity. As new construction, the small house addresses the fundamental need for shelter and security. In an addition, an inspired design can transform an average dwelling into one that is unified and complete. From a creative standpoint, small projects are enjoyable for us because of the immediacy of their design and construction.
Preservation & Restoration
Due to our training in architectural history and our extensive experience in restoring the great cottages of the Manchester-by-the-Sea area, we have established a strong reputation in preservation architecture. We are uniquely qualified to provide a complete range of services for all phases of preservation work and have been trusted with the restoration of many historically significant buildings throughout New England.
Our philosophy is to go beyond simply bringing back the original to incorporating historically accurate and sensitive designs which will address an older structure's inefficiencies and revitalize it in keeping with today's lifestyles and conveniences.
New Construction
Over half of our work is new construction. Our close familiarity with the best of older buildings in the area gives us an enlightened perspective on the vernacular of the community. We design not only to reflect the needs and personality of the owners, but to compliment the natural environment and the built environment as well.
In the creative process, we are mindful of our responsibility to both this generation and the next to provide an enhancement of our surroundings and an accurate reflection of the best of our times. We honor the assertion that what we build, both architecture and landscape, is a reflection of our culture, just as our art and music tell future generations what we were all about.
Major Renovations
Although renovations do not offer the freedom of new construction, we particularly enjoy these projects because they allow us to combine our extensive knowledge of historic architecture with the challenge of incorporating the best of today's comforts and conveniences into an appropriate solution to suit the family's lifestyle.
Details
The final detailing of a house begins during the last phase of construction, when a client is most anxious to complete the project. At this critical phase it is imperative to give adequate time to the detailing. When it is finished with care and precision, the house is a completed form. When details are left undone the structure becomes a face without features. Details bring beauty, scale, harmony and humanity to a home.
