"Entrance buildings to Avon Old Farms"

Avon Old Farms School
Stephen R. Holt Honored for Design Excellence

Avon Old Farms School, a preparatory boys school in Avon Conn., awarded its highest honor, "The Order of Old Farms", to Stephen R. Holt, AIA at a banquet in his honor. The award was presented for Stephen Holt's preservation of the historic campus and his ability to maintain the integrity of the school while adding innovative new architecture. The construction and preservation was acclaimed by Philip Johnson and Robert Stern in the television series "Pride of Place."

The English Cotswold architecture of Avon Old Farms is striking. The quadrangles, refectory and Masters homes were built in the 1920's by stone masons from England. The buildings were assembled to imitate a Cotswold village. Stephen R. Holt has designed new construction to complement the old, including an art and music studio complex, the library and science building, alumni house and a Norman Keep, renovated for use as an art gallery.

Stephen Holt's philosophy of architecture is evident in his private practice. His design of private clubs and residences continues to maintain the integrity of existing places while adding innovative structures.
