The Green House This home was built for a retired couple who were interested in the modern architecture of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. They wanted their home to be energy efficient and to blend with the natural environment. The site they selected was on a steep rocky wooded hillside overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. As serious art collectors they also needed natural lighting and expansive spaces in which to display their extensive collections.
The Green House The design solution was inspired by Cezanne’s pre-cubist paintings. He used the geometry within the natural world and integrated them with a subtle palette. We used vernacular New England building forms with flat roofed squares and rectangles that became a visual response to the granite outcropping. The Green House A preliminary sketch model shows how the new home fits into the landscape. The flat roofs were originally designed to function as green roof-gardens. These gardens are accessible to the owners and their guests through an internal stair which emerges from the living room. The Green House This symbol of basic early New England architecture houses the living room. The Green House
