Fields Rock This sketch by Eldon Deane, 1883, shows the original three story house and tower perched on a rock outcrop overlooking Lobster Cove in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Fields Rock This photo shows the house shortly after it was completed. In the foreground is a walkway out to a bathing pavilion, where residents could change into their suits and enjoy a swim in the cove. Fields Rock This picture shows what happened after World War II. During this period if a large summer cottage wasn’t torn down, it would be modified beyond recognition by lopping off the top floors with all their dormers and towers. This was a weirdly common practice in this area during the 1950’s and 60’s. It was, in part, simply a modernist reflex that all but destroyed many of the great houses in Manchester.
