Avon Old Farms The Avon Old Farms campus is a masterpiece of Arts and Crafts architecture and landscape planning. It is perhaps one of the best ensembles of romantic revival architecture and landscape design in America. Preservation Due to our training in architectural history and our extensive experience in restoring the great cottages of the Manchester-by-the-Sea area, we have established a strong reputation in preservation architecture. We are uniquely qualified to provide a complete range of services for all phases of preservation work and have been trusted with the restoration of many historically significant buildings throughout New England. Our philosophy is to go beyond bringing back the original to incorporating historically accurate and sensitive designs which will address an older structure's inefficiencies and revitalize it in keeping with today's lifestyles and conveniences. Charles G. Loring House “Emerson’s sensitivity and Roberts and Hoare’s craftsmanship are alike; absolute. expressive of deep caring about every shape, every surface, inside and out. The Loring House might well be the best of all the surviving Shingle Style houses of the 1880’s.” Vincent Scully, Sterling Professor Emeritas Darien Historical Society Working with Donald G. Tarpley, AIA, in Darien, Connecticut, we investigated a Federal house and found that its framing was that of an earlier 18th century salt-box. As the building was endangered by suburban sprawl, the local historical society decided to save it and make it their new headquarters. It was moved to a new foundation, carefully restored, and a new addition was built for society gatherings. Beach Club This club was built in an era when most New Englanders swam in the Atlantic Ocean. The original buildings were nothing more than a pavilion with a few men’s and women’s locker rooms on each side. |
